Karen Brown
Parallax Modern will be presenting the work of sculptor Karen Brown, whose use of mixed media reflects the complex relationship between the urban and industrial landscapes that surround us. Brown’s work explores the intersections of architecture, environment, and human intervention, creating art that is both visually striking and conceptually reflective.
One of her notable series features large archival photo transparencies of urban vistas, which are encased in clear acrylic panels with integrated lighting and held together with stainless steel. This innovative combination of materials highlights the ethereal, lacy, and often drippy forms of graffiti found on bus shelter panels and windows, capturing the fleeting and ephemeral nature of urban expression.
In another series, The Examined Life, Brown embeds holographic images within cast plaster reliefs, creating pieces that evoke the post-industrial landscape and our place within it. The work reflects both a sense of remorse and a critical examination of the environments we inhabit, inviting viewers to reflect on the marks of history and culture that shape our modern world.
Brown, a lifelong resident of Philadelphia now based in New Jersey, draws inspiration from the urban landscape, transforming what might be considered unsightly or overlooked into powerful, meaningful art. Her work invites viewers to reflect on how urban and industrial spaces influence and shape our lives and experiences.
Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, December 14, from 1-5PM.
